“I have a passion to sculpt and create sculpture that captures the joyous moments and beauty in life. I have found my sculptures with their wine theme entice both art and wine appreciators alike.”

Introducing Richard Thomas…

Richard Thomas is a gifted, creative sculptor with the drive and determination to create incredibly detailed, realistic bronze sculptures that capture the imagination of wine lovers and art appreciators alike. His “modern day” Bacchus and his angelic female Muse have a dynamic, intense interaction and reflect the playful, fun-loving attitude that Richard desires to portray through his work. Richard’s “Celebration of the Vine” series was inspired by personal experiences with his wife, Sheri, as well as a lifetime of celebrations with family and friends. A “toast” to good health, long life, great friends, a wonderful family and an incredible relationship are constant themes throughout his life. Richard is able to capture those playful, celebratory, exhilarating moments through his medium of clay, which eventually becomes bronze.

Richard says, “I have to create the pieces I see in my mind. I am a perfectionist and I use that to my best advantage in my sculptures. As a sculptor, I see the world rather differently. I am aware of all the shapes, angles and curves of people and objects. I am continually fascinated by the fact that everyone’s features are unique and I look at these differences as challenges to capture.

I discovered at an early age that I had the ability to draw. As my skill developed, I expanded this talent to carving marble using hand and power tools. As much as I enjoyed that medium, the process was both unforgiving and at times rather frustrating. An early venture into carving showed me the need to develop the craft of sculpting. Over time I turned my focus to clay and have never looked back. Through further studies of anatomy, I developed my own unique style that is expressed through bronze.

I get excited about forming the clay into human figures. It brings me a lot of pleasure to be able to create an anatomically correct human body. I may work on just the head of a sculpture for weeks to make certain it’s perfect.”

Richard has studied human anatomy and figurative sculpting at The Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art and Santa Monica College. His innate creativity and pursuit of excellence have allowed him to excel rapidly within the sculpting arena.

Richard has had the good fortune of studying with many fine artists. He studied stone carving with Alexandra Morosco, and began sculpting with clay under the direction of Mario Jason. Richard is very fortunate to study with the renowned sculptor, David Simon, an internationally recognized and much respected artist.

Richard is a member of the National Sculpture Society.
